After our busy adventures with gorillas in Rwanda and on safari in Kenya, our final stop on this African journey was to enjoy a few days of R&R. We chose the island of Zanzibar, in the country of Tanzania, because of the excellent diving and snorkeling that can be found there, as well as the laidback vibe similar to many Caribbean islands.

For our diving and snorkeling excursion, we hired a guide in the town where our hotel was located, and headed off to the small atoll of Mnemba, just off the northeast coast of Zanzibar.

Overall, the diving and snorkeling was great. We saw tons of fish species and other sea creatures. Unfortunately, the coral in Zanzibar is dying, just like it is in so many other places.

The following day, we took a leisurely trip to Zanzibar’s historic old town, known as Stone Town, as well as a visit to one of the island’s many spice farms, where they grow cinnamon, clove, vanilla, nutmeg, and lots of other fragrant species.

If you ever find yourself in Stone Town, be sure to pay a visit to the tiny but fascinating Freddie Mercury museum. Queen’s lead singer was born in Zanzibar.

The rest of our time in Zanzibar was even more relaxed. It was a great ending to a truly amazing trip. We were a little sad as we flew out of Africa and back to our “usual” reality. But in the years to come, we hope to return yet again to this extraordinary continent.

What a lovely way to end the trip! The people there are super friendly, despite being one of the most poverty stricken areas that I have visited. ❤️
Same here. Zanzibar seemed similar to some of the underdeveloped Caribbean islands we’ve visited. Amazing how people can have so little and still have a smile on their faces every day!
Wonderful trip!
